Use these instructions to set your Slack status. This is useful to let others know if you're working remotely.

Update your Slack status
Desktop App
Set your status
The example below shows how to set your status to show you are working remotely.
- From your desktop, click your profile picture in the top right
- Click the Update your status field.
- Choose a suggested status option or enter a custom status and select an emoji.
Remote Work Example: - Click Clear after to choose when your status will clear.
- Click Save.
Clear or edit your status
- From your desktop, click your profile picture in the top right.
- Click your current status to edit it, or click Clear status to remove it.
Mobile App
Set your status
Tap the You tab at the bottom of your screen.
You tab looks like this
- Tap the Update your status field.
Choose a suggested status option or enter a custom status and select an emoji.
Emoji icon looks like this
- Tap Clear after to choose when your status will clear.
- Tap Done.
Clear or edit your status
- Tap the You tab at the bottom of your screen.
- Tap your current status to edit it, or tap the X icon to clear it.
If you use the Outlook Calendar App for Slack your Slack status can be set using information from your Yale Office 365 calendar. The app will not override a status you set manually.
Update your availability
Slack automatically determines your availability. You’re set to active when Slack is open on your desktop or mobile device. You’re set to away after 10 minutes of desktop inactivity, or if you navigate away or close the app on your mobile device. If you’d like, you can manually set yourself to active or away at any time.
Desktop App
- From your desktop, click your profile picture in the top right.
Click Set yourself as away or Set yourself as active.
Here are some examples when you
might set yourself as away.- You're working remotely and leaving
to get a cup of coffee. - You're on vacation
- You're in the office and walking to a
different building.
Set yourself as active when you return and

Mobile App
- Tap the You tab at the bottom of your screen.
- Toggle Set yourself away on or off.
Set your time zone
Your Slack app syncs its time zone with the time zone of your device by default. You can override this setting using instructions Slack provides: https://slack.com/help/articles/219889247-Manage-your-time-zone-preferences#change-your-time-zone
